Topix carried a story, "Father charged in whipping" (April 27, 2007) noting the original article appeared in the Kansas City Star.
The same story was covered by KMBC.com Channel 9. Their report is entitled, "Father Accused Of Beating Boy With Belt" (April 27, 2007).
To suggest this father was charged with "whipping" is an injustice within itself. This incident, if as reported, was a beating and there is a big difference between the two. However, by calling it a whipping, then causes some to picture such an incident anytime someone utilizes the terms "whipping" or "swatting", and so goes the fight to make it illegal for a parent to use a swat as disciplinary action when other means are not effective.
Beatings are illegal. Whippings are not.

At the risk of sounding too facetious, I recall Bill Cosby saying that his kids couldn't sleep at night until they'd had a good beating. :-)
Can you imagine if he, or anyone else, joked about that today? Whew! The person wouldn't know what hit 'em.
