Two More Adult Stem Cell Successes, Embryonic Still Zero

Two more adult stem cell research successes have hit the news in the last couple of days.

The first involves a "living bandage" used to repair knee injuries. From LifeSiteNews:

In the Bristol university experiment, cartilage-producing stem cells taken from 23 patients with knee injuries, were coaxed to grow and coat a sponge-like scaffold, made from hyaluronic acid - a compound that occurs naturally in cartilage. The scientists applied this cellular “bandage” to the inside of tears in knee cartilage in the lab.

After two weeks of growth, the cells and scaffold were inserted to fix tears of up to 11 square centimetres in the knee cartilage of the patients. The two halves of the tear grew back together. The team, led by Anthony Hollander, a professor of rheumatology and tissue engineering at Bristol University, told the New Scientist, “We found the cartilage matures well, even in patients with early osteoarthritis.”

The second involves the repair of a woman's trachea. From LifeNews:

Castillo, who has two children and lives in Spain now, had a severe collapse of her lung, according to an AP report, and she required regular hospital visits to clear her airways. The problems left her unable to care for her children.

Doctors considered removing her entire left lung, but Macchiarini proposed the windpipe transplant. Scientists at Italy's University of Padua prepared the transplant and doctors at the University of Bristol took adult stem cells from Castillo's bone marrow from her hip and used them to create cartilage and tissue that could cover the windpipe.

Castillo, now the first patient to receive a whole organ transplant using her own cells, has shown no signs of rejecting the transplant and does not require any immune-suppressing drugs that have significant side effects.

She said she is "very happy" with the results and can now care for her children and walk without running out of breath.

Unlike the controversial embryonic stem cell research, adult stem cell therapy does not involve the destruction of human life. Stem cells from adult human beings are taken from that person's own body and used to stimulate growth of damaged tissue.

This brings the total of successful adult stem cell transplant therapies to somewhere around 80.

The number of successes for the life-destroying embryonic stem cell research: zero.

There is simply no reason--ethical or practical--to destroy human life in the pursuit of medical science.

Biden Steps in it Again with Embryonic Stem Cell Research

From Ryan Corsaro at CBS News, Democrat vice presidential nominee Joe Biden gives us one more reason not to vote for him and the most liberal senator in congress.

“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy, because there's joy to it as well, the joy and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect. Well guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?”

Well guess what, Joe? Most people I know do support stem cell research. We support adult stem cell research, the kind that doesn't destroy human life.

Biden is certainly engaging in the common misdirection liberals employ on this issue: call it "stem cell research" when what they want support for is embryonic stem cell research--you know, the kind that destroys human life?

He is also almost certainly referring offhandedly to Governor Sarah Palin's son Trig who has Down syndrome, and her statement to work for families who have children with special needs.

In making this statement, Biden has gaffed yet again. He has illustrated that he has little use for children born with Down syndrome, and little use for defenseless human life altogether.

People who only value other people for what they can do for them should not be trusted at the helm of the nation.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research: The Body Rejects It

While the pro-death community continues to push embryonic stem cell research, even though it has yet to produce a single medical success, Scientific American points out yet another problem with this line of research.

Not only does it involve the destruction of human life, the human body tends to reject these sells as foreign (which they are) and produce cancerous tumors.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine found that mice mounted an immune response after being injected with human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). The result: all the transplanted stem cells—which hold the promise of maturing into several different types of tissue—were dead within a week...The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, however, has not approved the injection of hESCs into patients because the raw cells have the potential to become cancerous.

The cells die off in a few days, and when more are injected to replace them, the next set die off even faster.

This is a natural response when anything is transplanted from one organism to another. I have a friend who received a kidney transplant some time back...and he will be on anti-rejection drugs the rest of his life to keep his body from rejecting the transplanted kidney.

Meanwhile, adult stem cell research has already produced dozens of successes ranging from new bone growth, diabetes treatment, regenerating heart tissue and treating leukemia.

There is no need to destroy human life in pursuit of a therapy that isn't producing anything and obviously faces major hurdles. Especially when there is a line of research that is already producing results without destroying human life.

Latest Adult Stem Cell Success: Bone Growth

Adult stem cell research continues to enjoy successes, while we have yet to see a single success from the much vaunted embryonic stem cell research

Recent trials in Australia have shown tremendous results regenerating bone after serious injuries. These trials involved subjects who had received serious injuries, but were still not healed after many months.

One man who suffered a compound fracture and was still using crutches a year later, regained the use of his leg the day after the procedure and is now fully recovered, pain free and regularly runs and plays football. Eight of the ten patients experienced full bone regrowth.

They are also looking at regrowing cartilage that could help with arthritis and hip injuries.

At this point, there have been dozens of successful treatments using adult stem cell therapy, including diabetes, heart tissue and leukemia.

There is no good reason to pursue embryonic stem cell research, which involves the destruction of human life.

Only a reckless contempt for human life could lead us to embrace a destructive possibility over a benign reality.

Smoke and Mirrors on Stem Cell Research in South Dakota

The Argus Leader ran a story yesterday telling us that "Sanford eyes stem cell study." They didn't tell us what kind of stem cell studies; important since there are basically two or three kinds (embryonic, umbilical cord, and adult), and while one is benign, the other has ominous moral and ethical implications. And the embryonic stem cell research is illegal in South Dakota.

The article tells us

A new donation from philanthropist T. Denny Sanford will give Sanford Health greater access to embryonic stem cell research, a process that the system's chief executive, Kelby Krabbenhoft, has expressed an interest in pursuing.

T. Denny Sanford says he will help the San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine come up with matching funds for a planned $115 million stem cell research center in La Jolla, Calif. Sanford hasn't said how much he plans to give. The donation has not been formally announced. But the San Diego Union-Tribune reported this month that an "out-of-state philanthropist," whom the consortium has declined to identify, has pledged $30 million, with $10 million paid up-front and the remainder in $2 million annual installments.

The scientific community sees a lot of medical potential from stem cells. These amazing cells, unlike most of the cells in our bodies, can "differentiate," which means they can produce all kinds of other types of cells.

This would be a very useful process to control, since it could regenerate damaged tissue, allowing the blind to see and the lame to walk.

Sanford, the chairman of Sioux Falls-based holding company United National Corp., said he sees potential in those studies.

"It's so exciting what they are already doing with stem cells," Sanford said last week.

I think what he's excited about seeing that's already being done with stems cells involves adult stem cells.

Embryonic stem cell research is supposedly long on "potential;" meanwhile, adult stem cell therapies are ALREADY helping people.

There are already dozens of cures and therapies from adult stem cell research, including treatments for meningitis-related limb damage, retina regeneration, heart tissue regeneration, angina, diabetes, bone cancer, nerve regeneration, liver cancer, and leukemia.

Embryonic stem cell research, which involves the destruction of human embryos, has yet to produce a SINGLE success.

As I was reading this article, though I'm somewhat used to it by now from the "mainstream" press, I was wondering, "Newspapers are supposed to inform people. Why isn't the Argus Leader informing people that adult stem cell is ALREADY helping people?" I got my answer about half-way through the article with what I suspect is a heading:

Ban might limit ability to attract leading scientists to state

Ah, there's the pitch from the "objective" people at the Argus Leader.

Hey, South Dakota! These ignorant Bible-thumping rubes are going to scare off all the smart people! You know, the ones with all the MONEY!"

So now the ultimate purpose of the article starts to come together. Though there's no direct connection between this Sanford money and the embryonic stem cell research and South Dakota, maybe with Sanford himself as the "bridge" we can create an article to leverage support for getting rid of this "primitive, ignorant" ban on embryonic stem cell research here in South Dakota.

The elitists at the Argus Leader want to stir the ignorant masses to cry out to their legislators to get rid of this "superstition-based" law so that the light of human ingenuity can shine across our state and land...at the cost of innocent human life created in the image of God.

There are a lot of smart people at the Argus Leader; they couldn't possibly be ignorant of the dozens of successes of adult stem cell research.

That's how they sell an idea that, otherwise, good people might realize is a bad thing. They hype the "potential" of embryonic stem cell research (which destroys human life), while marginalizing adult stem cell research (which ALREADY has successes under it's belt) with a couple of passing mentions of the technique and none of it's proven results.

How unfortunate that when you read your local newspaper, where you ostensibly should be able to get clear, unbiased information, you have to always be looking for the angle, you have to always be mindful of what ulterior motives they have to plant ideas in the minds of the unsuspecting public.

While there were a couple of fleeting mentions of adult stem cell research buried down in the article, I don't recall reading a single mention that said adult stem cell research is ALREADY providing cures and therapies. How disingenuous of the Argus Leader!

In wartime, you expect that the enemy country is going to peddle propaganda to help their side. Is that what we have here, in our ongoing culture war?

I believe it was Pope John Paul II who made the term "Culture of Death" famous to describe this faction of our society which seems enamoured with things which end innocent human life: abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research. I used to think that the "Culture of Death" was only passively inclined toward death. The more I see, however, the more I'm starting to believe death is something they eagerly embrace...as long as it's somebody else.

Another Adult Stem Cell Research Success

Chalk up yet another success for adult stem cell research; meanwhile, the crickets still chirp for a single success from the human-life-destroying embryonic stem cell research.

CitizenLink calls attention to at article in the Star-Telegram and Digital Journal about an athlete being successfully treated for meningitis-related damage to his limbs.

Two weeks after treatment, the soles of his feet and palms of his hands are softening, his circulation has improved, and his right foot is moving, said Dr. Zannos Grekos, the cardiologist who is treating Lampkin, now at the hospital in Naples, Fla., where Grekos is based."It looks like we have already saved his legs and arms," Grekos said. "Now we're hoping to save most of each foot and his hands."

This isn't the first adult stem cell treatment administered by Dr. Grekos

Grekos said he has used adult stem cells to treat patients for cardiovascular, lung and kidney. But he had never used the technology with a patient who was suffering tissue decay due to meningitis.

Adult stem cell therapy is ALREADY responsible for dozens of successful treatments ranging from muscle damage to leukemia, angina, vision loss, Parkinson's Disease, diabetes, and hear tissue regeneration.

There is simply no reason to pursue the destruction of human life with embryonic stem cell research when adult stem cell research is already producing breakthroughs.

Unless, of course, we've become cavalier about human life and embraced the culture of death...

Dormant Eye Stem Cells Stimulated to Regenerate Retina

BOSTON, March 18 /Standard Newswire/ -- Scientists at Schepens Eye Research Institute have discovered what chemical in the eye triggers the dormant capacity of certain non-neuronal cells to transform into progenitor cells, stem-like cells that can generate new retinal cells. The discovery, published in the March issue of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science (IOVS), offers new hope to victims of diseases that harm the retina, such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

"This study is very significant. It means it might be possible to turn on the eye's own resources to regenerate damaged retinas, without the need for transplanting outside retinal tissue or stem cells," says Dr. Dong Feng Chen, associate scientist at Schepens Eye Research Institute and Harvard Medical School, and the principal investigator of the study. "If our next steps work in animal disease models, we believe that clinical testing could happen fairly quickly."

Scientists have long been aware of Muller cells (which exist in great abundance in the eye) and have generally assumed that they were responsible for keeping retinal tissue protected and clear of debris. In recent years, however, researchers have reported that these cells sometimes exhibit progenitor cell behavior and re-enter the cell cycle (dividing and differentiating into other type of cells). Progenitor cells are similar to stem cells but are more mature and are more limited in the number of cells types they can become.

But until this study, scientists have not understood what triggers the transformation. In their study, Chen and her team observed that when the naturally occurring chemicals known as glutamate and aminoadipate (which is a derivative of glutamate) were injected into the eye, the Muller cells began to divide and proliferate. Not certain if these chemicals directly signaled the transformation, they tested them in the laboratory and in mice.

They added each chemical separately to cultures of pure Müller cells and injected each into the space below the retina in healthy mice. In both cases, the cells became progenitor cells and then changed into retinal cells. And with aminoadipate, the newly minted retinal cells migrated to where they might be needed in the retina and turned into desirable cell types. Specifically, they showed that by injecting the chemical below the retina, the cells give rise to new photoreceptors -- the type of cells that are lost in retinitis pigmentosa or macular degeneration, as a result, leading to blindness.

The team's next step will be to test this process in animals that have been bred to have diseases that mimic macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. The goal would be to learn if damaged retinas regenerate and vision improves. The team will likely use just aminoadipate because it only binds with Muller cells without the side effects of glutamate, which can actually harm retina cells in large doses.

"We believe that a drug created from the chemical aminoadipate or a similar compound has great potential for healing damaged retinas," says Chen.

Huckabee Speaks at Liberal Groups

OneNewsNow reports that the Family Research Council is criticizing Mike Huckabee for speaking at and receiving speaker's fees form some liberal organizations:

The Politico reports that last year the former Arkansas governor accepted $35,000 in speaking fees from Novo Nordisk, a biomedical firm involved in human embryonic stem-cell research. In August, OneNewsNow reported that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney actually holds stock in the drug-maker. Huckabee also accepted speaking fees from a non-profit group working to expand access to the "morning-after pill," and a group pushing to study whether tightening gun control laws will reduce violence.

Fred Thompson is pro-life. He believes in the sanctity of human life and that every life is worthy of respect. He had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate and believes Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that ought to be overturned. He consistently opposed federal funding to promote or pay for abortion and supported the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, the Child Custody Protection Act, and President Reagan's Mexico City policy. While Fred Thompson supports adult stem cell research, he opposes embryonic stem cell research. He also opposes human cloning.

An Inside Account of Bush's Embryonic Stem Cell Policy

Commentary Magazine features a long but interesting piece by Jay Lefkowitz, a lawyer and White House advisor.

The piece deals specifically with stem cell research and the process through which President Bush decided to allow taxpayer-funded embryonic stem cell research only on those lines where the human embryos were already destroyed.

This decision drew predictable disappointment on both sides of the issue, but Lefkowitz's article illustrates that it was a decision Bush didn't take lightly. It is also very informative about the entire issue and the arguments on both sides.

Stem Cell Breakthrough Likened to Turning Lead into Gold

It was the kind of breakthrough scientists had dreamed of for decades and its promise to help cure disease appears to be fast on the way to being realized.
Researchers in November announced they were able to turn the clock back on skin cells and transform them into stem cells, the mutable building blocks of organs and tissues.

Then just earlier this month a different team announced it had cured sickle cell anemia in mice using stem cells derived from adult mouse skin.

"This is truly the Holy Grail: To be able to take a few cells from a patient -- say a cheek swab or few skin cells -- and turn them into stem cells in the laboratory," said Robert Lanza, a stem cell pioneer at Advanced Cell Technology.

Amazingly, there remain some who STILL insist in destroying human life in embryonic stem cell research--even after this breakthrough, and even after the numerous adult stem cell treatments that have ALREADY helped people.

I knew there were many adult stem cell successes, but had never actually counted them. Well, the Family Research Council has done so, and it turns out the adult stem cell successes to embryonic stem cell successes is a little, um, lopsided:

Romney Opposes Embryonic Stem Cell Research...Except When He Supports It

LifeNews points to an interview of Mitt Romney by Katie Couric of CBS News and says Romney opposes embryonic stem cell research...except when he's for it.
Here's the "against it" part:

"I'm very much in favor of stem cell research, but in a way which I believe is moral and ethical," he said.

That means he opposes "creating new embryos through embryo farming or through cloning" -- which is a practice he finds "unethical ."

Here's the "for it" part:

"So what kind of embryos -- embryos that are created for procreation and then would be discarded? Are those the ones that you feel are perfectly fine from which to cull cells for stem cell research?" Couric asked.

"Yes," Romney responded, "those embryos that are referred to commonly as surplus embryos from in-vitro fertilization."

Romney could still support stem cell research and be completely pro life. Adult stem cell research is ALREADY producing cures, where embryonic stem cell research has yet to yield a single success.

And just a few weeks ago, scientist said they're having success with a procedure that makes adult stem cells become less specialized so that they possess essentially the same scientifically attractive qualities of embryonic stem cells.

There's just really no good reason to destroy human life in the name of research.

An Egg or a Unique Person?

LifeSite.net addresses the question of "personhood of fertilized eggs" we've been hearing about in the news the past few weeks:

Pro-life advocates have often pointed to the misrepresentation in media of terminology surrounding cloning and embryo research. Terms such as "pre-embryo", "balls of stem cells", or "fertilized eggs" are commonly used to indicate what human embryologists have defined scientifically as a human embryo in the earlier stages of development.

Despite what many refer to as the "debate" over when a human being begins to exist, the facts have been known for more than a hundred and thirty years. In 1875, the German zoologist Oskar Hertwig showed definitively that penetration of a spermatozoon into an ovum was the beginning of independent life and that the terms "conception" and "fertilization" are therefore interchangeable terms.

Human embryologists have shown that once fertilization has taken place, neither the male nor female sex cells (often misnamed "eggs") continue to exist.

Dianne Irving, a scientist and ethicist who has written extensively on the subject, says that misdirection by the media in terminology has enabled much of the enormous gains in legalizing destructive research on human embryos in the last ten years.

Irving has pointed out that once an "egg" has been fertilized, it's no longer an "egg" but a zygote. When it's an "egg," it only contains the mother's DNA. Once fertilized by the man's sperm, it takes on a unique set of DNA--which, incidentally, makes it no longer "part of the woman's body" with which she can do whatever she likes. It's unique human DNA proves it is a separate entity, just as her 1 week old baby has unique DNA.

As I said a couple of weeks ago, the "mainstream" media and other Leftists aren't really interested in "science" when they can twist the language to lead us away from the truth of a matter. In this case, the discussion of personhood of "fertilized eggs" is meant to make us think about the personhood of something "scrambled or over-easy" and not unique human beings.

For a group supposedly so concerned with "science," they certainly can be sloppy...when it suits their purposes.

Colonies of tiny cells flourishing in petri dishes in the US and Japan are reshaping the political and ethical landscape surrounding human stem-cell research.

In the process, these diminutive colonies also may level the playing field in stem-cell research – internationally and domestically.

These are some of the effects analysts say they see coming out of this week's announcements that two teams have genetically reprogrammed skin cells so that they take on the traits of embryonic stem cells.

Embryonic stem cells are the subject of intense medical interest because of their ability to develop into any of the major cell types in the human body. Over the long term, these stem cells could become the foundation for therapies for a range of diseases, scientists say. This week's announcement suggests it will be possible for scientists to study these cells without the ethical and political difficulties of harvesting them from unused human embryos.

For the emerging field of stem-cell research, "this is enormous," says Jesse Reynolds, a policy analyst at the liberal Center for Genetics and Society, based in Oakland, Calif. "I can't think of another development "that has been this big,"

"This is a paradigm shift," agrees Rev. Tad Pacholczyk, director of education at the National Catholic Bioethics Center in Philadelphia. "This will have a huge impact on the ethical debate."

Adult Stem Cells Made Like Embryonic Ones?

From LifeNews, researchers say they've come up with a way to force adult stem cells to return to a more malleable, less specialized state which essentially gives them the characteristics which make embryonic stem cells valuable in medical research--but without destroying human life.

It's not perfect yet, as the excerpt below indicates, but it looks promising:

The new technique isn't without problems as the researchers must disrupt the DNA of the skin cells to begin the process of reverting to embryonic form. This has the potential of causing cancer in the cells.

As a result, the cells may not be able to be used for medical transplants for patients suffering from diseases such as diabetes or Parkinson's.

“As long as we use those viruses, I don’t think we can say that the [reprogrammed] cells are as safe as embryonic stem cells,” said Dr. Yamanaka.

However, the researchers involved say they are confident they will be able to fix the problem so the "new" embryonic stem cells can be used for treatments.

Adult stem cell research, unlike embryonic stem cell research, is ALREADY providing cures for various injuries and diseases.

One word of caution, however. About a year or so ago, a statement was made that researchers had found a way to extract stem cells from embryos (or something like that) without destroying the human embryo. However, it soon came out that, well, not really. When you pinned down the researchers, they admitted they only thought it possible to do this, that it wasn't a proven and successful technique yet.

I hope that isn't the case here, and that this is a new and real advance that doesn't involve the destruction of human life. But even science has become political in recent decades, and has largely embraced the culture of death, we should always be cautious to ensure we aren't being misled down a path of dehumanization.

Another ADULT Stem Cell Advance

Science Daily is reporting yet another adult stem cell advance.

This one involves adult stem cells taken from blood vessels and researchers believe it will be effective in repairing heart tissue, bone, cartilage and muscles.

"To make this available as a therapy, we would take a muscle biopsy from a patient with a muscle injury or disease, remove the myoendothelial cells and treat the cells in the lab. The stem cells would then be re-injected into the patient to repair the muscle damage. Because this is an autologous transplant, meaning from the patient to himself, there is not the risk of rejection you would have if you took the stem cells from another source."

There is simply no need to destroy human life through embryonic stem cell research when adult stem cell research is already helping people.
