Tim Johnson: Old School Big Government Advocate

While the health of Senator Tim Johnson and his ability to carry out the demanding job of a U.S. senator has been on everyone's mind for months, the Argus Leader reports Republican senate candidate Joel Dykstra says he'd rather focus on the issues:

State Rep. Joel Dykstra, R-Canton, faces a race complicated by the health of his opponent, but the message he hopes will reach voters is that an intractable Congress, including his opponent, Sen. Tim Johnson, has failed to deal with issues such as energy security, health care, immigration and Social Security.

I think this is the right way to go. Johnson's physical challenges are certainly a valid consideration, but the most relevant discussion is on the issues.

The problems Dykstra mentions in the excerpt above are ones that grow worse with each passing day.

And while Johnson has tried to insulate himself against looking too extreme on these issues, the fact remains that he hasn't shown any leadership or aggressive action in dealing with them.

Inaction on energy policy by Johnson and his liberal colleagues in congress is what has wrought $4.00 a gallon gas. We haven't built a new refinery in over 30 years and congress won't lift a finger to do so. We have huge oil reserves under American soil, yet congress would rather pander to environmental extremists than use it.

Government meddling, over-regulation and dabbling in socialized medicine by liberals in congress have caused our health care system to become unbalanced and wobble out of control. We need to get back to a fully market-based system where the consumer is more (not less) involved in his health care decisions; instead, Johnson and his liberal party are attempting to put out a fire by throwing a bucket of gasoline on it.

As for illegal immigration, the Democrats have the same bucket of gas in hand. Instead of securing our borders, removing those who have invaded our country illegally, and implementing an orderly immigration system, all they have up their sleeve is amnesty.

Social Security? It was a government-sanctioned ponzi scheme to begin with, and has gone on to become unmanageable. Again, we need to fix it and move to a free market model; all the Democrats have up their sleeve is (you guessed it) more taxes and more government meddling.

It's time to show members of the old school the door. Socialism has been tried around the world, and it fails everywhere it's tried. It's been tried in this country for 50 years...and fails everywhere we look.

It's time for a return to the values and methods that made America great. It's time to usher out the big government advocates and usher in someone with a vision of America's greatness: Joel Dykstra.
