I thought I was fairly on top of new trends, but Mark Creech has a piece at OneNewsNow about something I had never heard of: AWOL machines.
AWOL stands for "Alcohol Without Liquid" -- a device consisting of an oxygen generator and a hand-held vaporizer into which the user pours his or her favorite alcoholic beverage. The device produces a mist of alcohol inhaled through the mouth, allowing the alcohol to enter the bloodstream through the lungs and traveling straight to the brain. Many medical experts say the machines, marketed as "the ultimate party toy," produce a quick and intense high off alcohol.
Some have gone so far as to say AWOL is to drinking what smoking crack is to snorting cocaine. Teresa A. Barton, interim executive director of the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy, said the devices have "no purpose other than to get you drunk."
Unlike regular drinking, where the alcohol goes through the stomach and liver, this goes straight into the lungs and into the bloodstream.
Alcohol was dangerous enough the old-fashioned way; it just got even worse.
Currently 22 states have outlawed these devices; South Dakota is not among those that have banned them. Yet.

Wow. That's pretty stupid.
One of the reasons we have a liver is to filter out stuff that's bad or us. It's protection. But bypassing that protection seems like a dumb idea to me.
Also, it seems to come out of the same thinking that resulting in people mixing household chemicals for meth. Just to get high and no other reason. It's lazy and stupid and dangerous.
I would have no problem with the South Dakota legislature outlawing this.
