Dykstra Senate Campaign Target of Anthrax Hoax

From today's mailbag:

Sioux Falls, SD -- US Senate Candidate Joel Dykstra’s campaign headquarters was the target of a threatening letter today. At approximately 10:30 AM, a letter containing a white powdery substance and a threatening message was received in the regular US Mail. The campaign office staff immediately evacuated the work area and called 911. Within minutes of receiving the call, the Sioux Falls police, Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue, the City Health Department and federal authorities were on site. Dykstra said, "While we don’t generally expect this sort of thing to happen in South Dakota, it is comforting to know that these agencies stand ready to respond with such a high degree of professionalism if the need arises. I’d like to thank everyone for their responsiveness”.

Dykstra was campaigning at Dakotafest in Mitchell when the incident occurred. He received word from the office and was able to confirm over the phone that no one was injured and no further danger existed. He immediately wrapped up campaign activities early to get back to the Sioux Falls office.

“While we find the event disturbing and disappointing it’s mostly a distraction.” He said. “We are pleased to be able to get back to work and focus on the campaign. We are getting a great deal of support and appreciate the encouragement we’ve received from around the state.“

The Dykstra campaign is treating this as an isolated event and not letting the incident interrupt campaign activities. At this time there are no further details about the letter itself or the substance that was included. However the investigation is ongoing.
