Liars, Cheats and Thieves…But At Least They’re Proud of Themselves!

BY PAUL E. SCATES

The good Education of Youth has been esteemed by wise Men in all Ages, as the surest Foundation of the Happiness both of private Families and of Common-wealths. Almost all Governments have therefore made it a principal Object of their Attention, to establish and endow with proper Revenues, such Seminaries of Learning, as might supply the succeeding Age with Men qualified to serve the Publick with Honour to themselves, and to their Country. -- Benjamin Franklin, Proposals Relating to the Education of Youth in Pennsylvania, 1749

Old Ben must be spinning in his grave. You see, for the past several decades those who run the educational establishment have churned out graduates who were indoctrinated with the idea that self-esteem is in no way tied to knowledge, performance or any other objective standard. Thus you get young adults who can’t write a paragraph or even speak a full sentence that is understandable except by others equally ignorant of English grammar and syntax. Think: text messaging, emoticons, stylized misspellings, etc.

In their misguided efforts to provide our youth with self-confidence, they have abandoned the traditional method of linking academic performance and achievement as the source of pride and self-esteem in favor of the “fog up a mirror” method. Haven’t heard of that method? It goes something like this: if you are breathing (determined by holding a mirror up to your nostrils; if your breath fogs up the mirror, it proves you’re alive), then you’re “special,” a “unique individual” who should be very proud of yourself, regardless of how you behave, what you know or understand, what you’re able to do, how you treat others, etc.

No performance standards, of course, for those are oppressive and exclusionary; can you imagine the damage to tender psyches that is involved if a child scores poorly on test, or (gasp!) even fails? To prevent such traumatic interruptions in their development, we have pass/fail grading, self-directed learning and individualized learning plans. You know, to accommodate the “unique learning styles” of each individual student.

One result of this approach, of course, is the rejection by young people of any and all standards. After all, if they’re told and shown repeatedly that it’s their individual opinion, belief and understanding that is most important, and that objective standards are arbitrary, meaningless rules, often based on bias (racial, cultural, gender, sexual orientation, et al), then challenging job performance standards, for example, or DMV requirements, traditional standards of attire, public behavior, language, etc., is a natural outcome.

Moral standards, too, such as character, integrity and honesty, are easily rejected as oppressive rules imposed by “dead, old white men” that no longer have “relevance.” That relevance, of course, is totally subjective, and each person determines for himself/herself if they want to subject themselves to such concepts. In the wholesale abandonment of religious beliefs by young people around the time they go off to college we can see the true impact of this radical individualism. When you consider that our Founders expressly stated that our democratic republic is fit only for “a moral and religious people,” the impact of that individualism is frighteningly apparent.

But is there any real proof that our young people are straying from traditional moral beliefs? According to the non-profit Josephson Institute, there’s plenty. For several years now they’ve taken a survey of high school kids about lying, cheating and stealing, and the decline of traditional moral standards is readily apparent in the responses. In their 2008 Report Card on the Ethics of American Youth, the Institute said that responses from almost 30,000 teenagers “reveal entrenched habits of dishonesty for the workforce of the future.”

The responses from our next generation’s politicians, teachers, cops and corporate executives should alarm you. Overall, 30% of students admitted to stealing from a store during the past year, a two percent increase from 2006. Cheating in school is rampant, according to the survey, and continues to get worse: 64% said they had cheated on tests, an increase of four percent since 2006. Thirty-eight percent admitted to cheating two or more times.

The responses about lying are even worse: 83% of public school and private religious school students admitted to lying to their parents about something significant (78% of those attending independent non-religious schools admitted to lying).

"As bad as these numbers are,” the surveyors warned, “it appears they understate the level of dishonesty exhibited by America’s youth,” since more than a fourth of the students (26 percent) admitted they had lied on at least one or two of the survey questions! (What, you’re surprised?)

The most disturbing part of the survey, however, is that “despite these high levels of dishonesty, these kids have a high self-image when it comes to ethics.” Seventy-seven percent of the students surveyed said that when it comes to doing what is right, “I am better than most people I know.” And 93% of the students indicated satisfaction with their own character and ethics!

In the 50s and even into the 60s, our schools were preparing America’s youth not only to think and reason, but also to recognize the benefits to self and society of moral and behavioral standards developed through the experience of thousands of years of human history. However, in less than four decades the liberal/socialist educational establishment has succeeded in destroying those standards in the minds of many young Americans.

Franklin said it is the principle object of almost all governments to endow and support schools in order to “…supply the succeeding Age with Men qualified to serve the Publick with Honour to themselves, and to their Country.” Qualified? Serve? Honor? Only if everyone in the past three generations are planning to pursue careers in politics, where those words apparently have terribly different meanings than they hold for ordinary Americans.

Rome is Burning – And We’re Having a National Fiddling Convention

BY PAUL E. SCATES

While politicians of both parties are fiddling away, mostly in squabbles about who has the most power, the issues that affect the daily lives of all Americans are being ignored. And if politicians aren’t yammering on endlessly about them, then to the distinguished members of the Fourth Estate don’t recognize those issues as newsworthy.

In my life I’ve heard people ask about how the ordinary German people could have simply stood by quietly while Hitler ascended to power, how the Russians allowed the Bolsheviks to seize control of the government, or how the Jews in Europe meekly acquiesced to the horrors of the Nazi-imposed holocaust, et al. In fifty years or so, people will be asking the same question about the demise of the United States as a world power, or even as a nation. So we need not ask ‘Why?’ or ‘How?’ others succumbed to their fates so meekly; all we have to do is examine what’s happening today in our own nation.

For example, how about our dependency on foreign oil? Oh, sure, the gasoline prices are down right now, so that issue is no longer important, even though we were paying over $4 a gallon just weeks ago. Even though OPEC has and plans to again cut production to bolster oil prices. The Iraqi oil minister just proclaimed that $80 a barrel (which equates to around $3 a gallon for gasoline) is a “reasonable” price. (No good deed goes unpunished.)

Our own politicians – you know, those who so unctuously pledge to “serve” their constituents’ interests – have steadfastly refused to harvest the oil we have in our own country in order to give us time to develop practical and affordable alternatives to the oil that gives our enemies such power over us. No, it’s not a long-term solution, but neither is paying over $700 billion a year to those who hate us, while leaving our own oil – estimated to be several times more than Saudi reserves – untouched. If you think oil-per-barrel prices won’t again skyrocket, sending gasoline to $4 or $5 dollars a gallon (or more), you’re hopelessly ignorant of world politics. Our politicians are not supposed to be that ignorant, yet they insist on maintaining our status as helpless prey to socialist wackos (Chavez in Venezuela) and filthy rich oil sheiks who support Islamic terrorists with the money we pay them.

How about debt? If any one of us owed money in the proportion that our nation owes, we would have long-since been bankrupt, penniless and homeless. The second-most powerful nation in history (the USSR) no longer exists, yet it wasn’t defeated militarily. It collapsed economically (in no small part due to the arms race with the U.S.). We owe more money to China that any of us could calculate, and more to Saudi Arabia and the other oil-producing nations, yet our politicians tell us that the “crisis” of the financial industry (and the auto industry, and whoever else decides they ‘need’ a bailout) requires us to allocate them money that we have to borrow! Try that in your own finances and see how long you keep the wolves from the door…yet our nation can do it indefinitely?

Now we have a president who is much a socialist as Hugo Chavez, who apparently hates this country that provided him such amazing opportunities, and who will oversee a Democrat-controlled administration for at least four years. Do you think we’ll begin drilling our own oil (which, by the way, would provide a huge economic benefit in equipment sales, thousands of jobs, etc.)? When the supposedly fiscally conservative Republicans increased our debt, do you think Obama and the Democrats, who are known for tax-and-spend and never met a government program that costs billions they didn’t like, will reduce it? No, even though we’re at a critical point in our history, facing the real threat of economic collapse and dependence on nations that hate us, it won’t happen. Why?

Because you and I allow our politicians to so cavalierly ignore these and other critical issues, while they busy themselves with who gets what party post, or who gets the most pork for their district.

I feel like I’m watching one of those nature shows on Discovery channel, where the slowest wildebeast in the herd is systematically cut off and surrounded by lions, then brought down and eaten, even while it’s still alive and aware of what’s happening. Our politicians are the cameramen; they see what’s happening, but they have other priorities, so the animal is savagely killed and eaten. Do you honestly think that the Saudis and other Middle Eastern nations care about what fate befalls us? Or China? Come to think of it, do you think any of our politicians, of either party, honestly care? Their arrogance and persistent non-action prove otherwise.

But then…so does our own unwillingness to demand that our representatives support our Constitution and act in the best interests of this nation. Don’t ask how Hitler or the Bolsheviks took power, or how the Jews so meekly succumbed to their fate. We’re showing exactly how it happened. Fiddle music, anyone?

At the Precipice – What’s At Stake This November

BY PAUL E. SCATES

I turned 59 years old this week. It doesn’t seem like 41 years ago when, at age 18, I went off to war. That was the beginning of my real education, despite the four years I later spent in college. In Vietnam I learned firsthand how deceitful and amoral American career politicians of both parties can be, for they put us into Vietnam, and then dishonored all who served there when the U.S. cut and ran, while they shamelessly called it “honorable” to abandon our allies.

In the years since, I’ve watched politicians in both major parties grow increasingly self-serving and contemptuous of the American people. In the 90s Republicans showed the true nature of all career politicians when they gained control of Congress…and expanded government and spent our money like drunken sailors, exactly like liberal Democrats.

During those 41 years I’ve had to vote again and again for what I perceived as “the lesser of two evils.” The presidential election this year seems to be just more of the same: out of over 300 million Americans, our only choice is between two career politicians, both of whom (like their respective political parties) are apparently willing to prostitute themselves in every way possible in order to gain the office they seek. However, as much as this election seems like so many previous ones, I’m writing this essay because it’s different…far different.

Lest you still suspect me of rank partisanship, let me say this: I am not a Republican, and I despise John McCain. I resent having to cast votes for the likes of him or Bush, but also for the likes of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton (alas, I actually voted for both). The Democrats, too, have abandoned even the pretense of principle or character in their candidates. For both parties it’s all about acquiring power at all costs.

As an independent, constitutional Conservative who has little but contempt for both Republicans and Democrats, I’m outraged that McCain co-authored the most un-constitutional legislation ever passed into law (McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform), yet now asks to be put in charge of protecting and defending that same Constitution. He blames money for corrupting politicians, but ordinary Americans know that it’s the politicians’ (of both parties) willingness to take special interest money that is the real problem. In short, he’s just another career politician who thrives because you and I have let them, because we pay attention to what they say and not to what they actually do. However, I’m outraged that Obama has the gall to ask to be our president, too, for he is not just another arrogant career politician (although he is certainly that) who happens to be in the other party.

Obama is a Socialist. While politicians in both parties have pushed us ever closer to big government socialism, it’s simply out of their self-interest and never-ending thirst for more power. Obama is something different: he is a “true believer” in the Socialist philosophy, and his record shows it.

Obama has worked his entire adult life to promote the Socialist philosophy that says it’s necessary to “spread the wealth around,” that the government can take care of people better than the people themselves, and that he (and others like him) are so much wiser than ordinary Americans. Conservative talk radio people keep questioning his ‘judgment,’ but his judgment isn’t the problem; it simply reveals who he really is. He has acted and is acting on what he believes, and associating with those who share his beliefs. Why shouldn’t he be friends with Bill Ayers and work for ACORN? They share his anti-American Socialist views.

I say “anti-American” because a Socialist has to be against the foundations of this country, for they prove how bankrupt and false the Socialist system is. The institutions that have made our prosperity, freedom and strength possible are based on the polar opposite beliefs of what Socialists believe; therefore the Declaration, Constitution and Bill of Rights must be denigrated and disparaged for its failures, the flag and what it stands for must not be honored, he must not “take sides” by standing with and for America against our enemies. Of course Obama would never admit it (yet), but he doesn’t have to: just listen to what he says, consistently; it’s the mantra of Socialism, all about class divisions and class warfare; about redistribution of wealth from those who earned it to those who didn’t; about fairness and equality, etc.

But if Socialism is so grand and noble then why, when the Soviet empire collapsed, were there such widespread, joyous celebrations throughout the Eastern and Central European nations that had long suffered under that system? And if the U.S. is so unfair and unequal, then why do millions of people of all colors and nationalities risk everything year after year to come here? Is it because, as Obama has been saying, this nation is so awful that we need to be remade into his image? No, the American Dream says that anyone who can make it here…can ‘make it’ here. Black middle class Americans constitute the fifteenth largest economy in the world, so it’s not like blacks who prepare themselves and work hard can’t succeed. But Obama’s Socialism will destroy such opportunities for everyone, especially for minorities and the poor, just as it did in the Soviet Union and their satellite states, in Cuba, China and elsewhere.

Although Obama brazenly disavows his clear record of long-time Socialist activities and affiliations, that’s the modus operandi of Socialists: whatever tactic works is the one they’ll use, and they brag about it, just not in public. Morality is only a “bourgeois” nicety; winning at all costs is the agenda. Barack Obama is not just a contrarian politician, to one side or the other of the traditional American political spectrum. He stands far outside that tradition, and represents the destruction of our political, economic and social foundations. As a Socialist, he believes in the opposite of our Founding principles. He believes those in government (i.e., him and his cronies) are smarter than you and I, that they know how to spend our money better than we do, and that they – not the ‘angry and bitter’ American people – are better able to run our lives. Sound familiar?

Socialism has been tried many, many times, and it’s always marked by the suppression of liberty and the encroachment of government into every area of human life (necessary to keep the anointed ones in power after their policies are revealed to result in such human horror and deprivation). Nobody with even partial reasoning capacity can honestly think that “more government” will benefit Americans, but that’s Obama’s answer to every issue. He’s just being true to his beliefs.

Again, Obama is not “just another career politician,” he is something drastically different from those we’ve held our noses and voted for. He will dismantle the Founding principles and the Constitution that protects our liberty and opportunities to prosper materially…the very liberties you’ve enjoyed in building your lives, the very prosperity that capitalism has made possible. Oh, he’ll do so with good intentions, but in destroying our foundations he will, in effect, kill the goose that laid the golden egg.

History isn’t partisan; the record is clear about what Socialism does to nations and people. If he’s truly as smart as people say, he knows this…which is precisely why he presents himself as something else. He’s willing to deceive you in order to gain the power to try that deadly system here because he believes, as all demagogues have always believed, that because they’re so much smarter than everyone else who ever tried it, “it will be different here.” No…it won’t.

Barack Obama’s entire adult career has been an assault on the nation he now wants to lead; his words have defamed and insulted and disparaged everything good about this country; and his campaign has been one long lie about his beliefs, his associations and his career. I ask you to go on-line and verify these words, for the sake of our children and grandchildren, but also in the name of some others.

Veterans’ Day will come a week after this election, and all those who sacrificed so much so you and I could be free and build decent lives deserve far more than to have everything they stood, fought and died for handed over to one who cares nothing for any of it. As one who followed in their stead but by the grace of God returned home, I believe I’ve earned the right to ask this of you on their behalf.

McCain, for all his faults, at least won’t completely destroy the foundations of our democratic republic. With the Democrat-controlled Congress empowering him, Obama most certainly will.

Is he evil? I don’t think so. Is he wrong? Absolutely, and terribly. Lenin, Castro, Mao, et al, were brilliant and had good intentions for their people, too, and they brought material deprivation, social squalor and third-world status to those they wanted to help, not to mention over 150 million deaths to their own citizens from starvation and the political brutality required to maintain their power.

It’s not about race, it’s not about Democrat or Republican…it’s about the continuation of the American Dream. As I’ve written for years, we desperately need to fix our political system…but we don’t need to replace it with one proven to be drastically, tragically worse. Churchill said, “The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”

The Obama campaign is right about one thing: this November marks a turning point in American history. The American people will either step up and reject the lure of Socialism, re-shoulder our responsibilities to govern ourselves, and begin throwing out the career politicians of both parties…or we’ll surrender to the sweet lies of a deadly political philosophy that will mark the end of the American experiment. Millions of Russians, Cubans, Chinese, Poles and others would tell you, if they could, that some political mistakes can’t be undone. I urge you to look beyond the rhetoric; the Bible says that Satan himself comes to us disguised as an angel of light.

No, Barack Obama is not Satan. But he is a Socialist., and many otherwise brilliant people have succumbed to the sweet lies of that deadly philosophy. Apart from giving away other people’s money as a “community activist,” voting “present” as a state legislator and campaigning for president, he has never actually done anything except talk. Yes, he does that very well, and so convincingly…but so did the serpent in the Garden. Obama hasn’t earned the right to be our president, or the right to your vote. I urge you: don’t give it to him.

The Real Election--How are YOU Voting?

BY PAUL E. SCATES

For months now we’ve been inundated with platitudes and promises from the presidential wannabes, and with their prescriptions for what ails our nation. It’s revealing that none of them (including Mike Huckabee, the “almost pastor”) offered anything but the same old tired political and ideological claptrap, when all the problems in the United States today can be easily traced to one source: sin. More specifically, it is the American people’s rejection of God that lies at the root of this country’s ever-faster decline into moral confusion, social anarchy and national shame.

The Founders of this nation were in almost unanimous accord that the God of the Bible was the source and author of our liberty, and of any material prosperity that would eventually come to us. For almost two hundred years, the American people held to their admonitions to acknowledge God, and this country became the most prosperous and powerful nation in the history of mankind. Yet we now let pseudo-intellectuals, semi-literate entertainers and amoral political parasites dismiss God as if all our blessings didn’t come from Him

It has been said that if we don’t learn from history we’re doomed to repeat its mistakes. Although I don’t believe the parallels are exact between the Biblical children of Israel and the United States, I do believe that we are repeating the mistake those ancient people made. As my friend and Sunday school teacher explained last Sunday –

In 1Samuel 8, after Samuel’s sons proved to be corrupt and dishonest in leading Israel, the people demanded a king. When Samuel tried to dissuade them, God spoke to him, saying to Samuel, “They have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me…” He then delineated what a king would mean, in practical terms (vv. 9 – 17): “…he will take your sons…to do his plowing and to reap his harvest and to make his weapons of war and equipment… He will also take your daughters…he will take the best of your fields…and give them to his servants. He will take a tenth of [your produce] and give to his officers and to his servants. He will also take…your best young men…and use them for his work…and you yourselves will become his servants.”

Now, we don’t have a king; we have a president. And an imperial Congress. And a Supreme Court that believes it is. Do you recognize the demands of the federal government in the above passages, or the taxes that our “king” appropriates from us, or the fact that we, once a free and prosperous people, have become servants to the government that is supposed to serve us?

1Chronicles 29, verse 12: “Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to strengthen everyone.” Not from John McCain’s hand, nor in Barrack Obama’s power…but God’s. The God this nation has rejected, just as the children of Israel did, in favor of rule by men.

Daniel 2:21: “It is He who…removes kings and establishes kings…” Read “presidents” instead of kings and you get the idea. But we think it is us who will elect Obama or McCain, that our liberty – the freedom that God gave us and that we used to reject Him, His leadership and provision – is somehow deserved and that we can do with it as we please. But God knew this would happen, just as He knew the children of Israel would also be faithless. In Deuteronomy 8:11, Moses gave fair warning to them: “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God…otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them…and your silver and gold multiply…then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God…”

In Deuteronomy 28, there is an even clearer parallel between the children of Israel and the U.S. today. In verse 1, Moses says, “Now it shall be if you will diligently obey the Lord your God…[He] will set you high above all the nations of the earth.” But in verses 15 - 68 lie this prophetic vision: “But it shall come about, if you will not obey the Lord your God…the Lord will send upon you curses, confusion and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly…because you have forsaken Me…The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies…you shall be oppressed and robbed continually…a people you do not know shall eat up the produce of your ground and all your labor…the alien who is among you shall rise above you…and you shall go down lower and lower…because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things, therefore you shall serve your enemies…”

Although God has provided abundant grace and forgiveness to us through Jesus Christ, He is also the God of justice, and He holds us accountable for our rejection of Him, just as He did His own chosen people. Ponder this: the second-most powerful nation in the history of mankind no longer exists (the USSR). You think we’re immune to God’s justice…so did the children of Israel. They followed man in the form of the kings they demanded, and they suffered all the consequences of which they were warned; indeed, they’re still suffering them today. That’s not just Bible, it’s history.

American citizen, the real decision isn’t about McCain or Obama. Our real choice is, and has always been…God or man? For over fifty years we’ve chosen man, resulting in moral confusion throughout our society, shameful political cowardice (in Vietnam, and coming again in Iraq) and appeasement, both of enemies abroad and short-sighted ideologues here at home. It was God, not man, who blessed America. Isn’t it time we again acknowledge that fact?

Bush's 'Fiscal Restraint' - How Politicians Think

By Paul E. Scates

The headline was enough to make any American taxpayer stand up and cheer – “Bush Threatens Veto of Runaway Congressional Spending.”

But wait a minute...who is this “Bush” who’s making such a promise? If it’s our president, we need to recall that during the past ten years, while the Republican Party has controlled Congress, he didn’t veto even one appropriations bill. Even the most expensive public works legislation in history, the $286.4 BILLION highway appropriations bill of 2005, which contained over $24 BILLION in earmarks – i.e., pet projects selected by virtually every senator and representative to gain favor with voters by providing federal funds in the form of construction projects and jobs, and added just prior to the final votes so nobody has the opportunity to question or oppose these expenditures. Fred's Appeal– He’s “Anybody But Those Guys!”...for Now

By Paul E. Scates

He hasn’t even declared his candidacy, yet he’s running dead even with the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination. He hasn’t raised any money to speak of, while they’ve raised over $50 million, yet more people are talking about Fred Thompson than Romney, McCain and Guiliani. Naturally, the handlers and spin-meisters of the other Republican candidates are frustrated, bothered and upset at such a turn of events. (Full Story)

Too Broken Not to Fix

By Paul E. Scates

I read today that backers of the compromise immigration bill see the resistance lessening, and believe it will pass this week. Although it’s over 300 pages, the desperate rush to ram through this legislation last week before any senator had the time to read it, let alone reflect on its provisions, was deemed necessary because the current immigration system is “too broken not to fix.” (Full Story)

Congressional "Reality Show"--Bread and Circuses...Again

By Paul E. Scates

If the only news you get is from the networks or the newspaper, you may think that the next great moment in U.S. history will be the passage of the Kennedy/McCain immigration bill, or some “compromise” version of it. Perhaps you’ve forgotten, though, that just a few months ago the news headlines were all about the impending bankruptcy of the Social Security system.

What have these two items to do with one another, you ask? Well, for the 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. (a more realistic, non-politically correct figure is 20 million or more), Social Security benefits will be available to them at retirement age. That’s only part of the estimated $2.5 Trillion this “compromise” will cost American taxpayers. And no, the immigrants have not paid one red cent into Social Security, nor have their elderly relatives, who will also be eligible. (Full Story)
