Hysterics in the Heartland

Bob Kravitz is a sports writer for the Indianapolis Star. He decided to exercise his First Amendment right in his column today and made a complete ass of himself in the process (which is his right).

In an article titled “I won’t be an ugly American” Kravitz tries to portray well-documented civil rights abuses, government oppression and slaughter of millions in Communist China with some mostly inaccurate perceptions of failures here to live up to American ideals. Instead of simply saying that, as a sports writer at the Olympics, he intends to stick to sports and stay clear of politics he precedes to list for us some of what he sees as moral equivalents of some of the well-known abuses of the Chinese people perpetrated by a despotic totalitarian government and instances of what he sees as American hypocrisy and arrogance.

He asks rhetorically “Are there issues in China? Absolutely.” He mentions political prisoners and dissidents, the 1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square, Tibetan independence and the recent earthquakes in Sichuan Province. But, you know, we Americans don’t have much room to talk do we? The civil rights marches in the 60s, for example, are not much different than government tanks rolling against peaceful demonstators resulting in the death of untold numbers of students. And what about the riots during the 1968 Democratic National Convention? The killing of students at Kent State is perhaps a nearer equivalent, but all these examples were instances of our failure to live up to the American ideal, not examples of institutional government oppression. We, as a nation, have repented of our sins.

While acknowledging “terrible human losses” under Communist rule in China (estimates are upwards of 75 million, Mr. Kravitz, and the numbers keep rising!), we have the shame of slavery (the end of which came about only after fighting the bloodiest war of our country's history) and internment of Japanese citizens in WWII (an arguable decision by a Democrat president) and the “epic failure to help the Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans.” How many billions of dollars have been spent on relief for Katrina victims? Indiana just suffered some of the worst flooding in the history of our state, yet Hoosiers helped each other and got to work rebuilding and repairing the damage with little help from the feds. Snow storms in the Upper Plains last winter were devasting but the rugged sons of pioneers similarly took care of themselves and the rest of the country barely heard mention of the catastrophe. The “epic failure” that followed Hurricane Katrina was more about incompetence and corruption of local government, not to mention lack of personal responsibility, than indifference in Washington. Displaying even greater depths of ignorance and moral derrangement Kravitz continues his assault on sanity:

[T]here are different definitions of human rights in different parts of the world.
We look at the lack of press freedoms, the restrictions on child-bearing and the lack of an independent legal system as outrageous examples of an authoritarian government that doesn't cherish the individual.
They look at our lack of universal health care, our soaring unemployment and the lack of a cradle-to-grave government-sponsored safety net as human rights violations.

I think I see a pattern here. Mr. Kravitz has apparently been drinking the Kool-Aid. He didn’t blame the 9-11 attack on the CIA or repeat the canards “Bush Lied, People Died” and “No Blood for Oil” but he may as well have.

The Life and Health Chameleon

The pro-abortion South Dakota Campaign for UnHealthy Families (how do these people even say the official name for their outfit with a straight face?) has rolled out their new website.

They say evil loves to counterfeit good. With a name that sounds positive and good (instead of one that's honest like "South Dakota Campaign for Dead Children" or "South Dakota Campaign for Barren Families" or "South Dakota Campaign for Hurting Women") and a website color scheme that mimics the website of the organization working to save unborn children and preserve healthy families, one has to wonder if that's what is going on here.

The "Healthy Families" group supports a practice that not only kills an unborn child, with unique human DNA and a beating heart, it can also lead women to mental illness, substance abuse, and breast cancer.

That doesn't sound too healthy to me--for mother or child.

I hope no one is misled by this "health chameleon" we have in our state. The results could be very unhealthy.

Bush Leaves Pelosi With Few Options

Democrats, lead by friend of Big Tuna Nancy Pelosi, have found themselves out maneuvered once again by the “boy president,” and it is hard to imagine a counter strategy that would not anger far-left supporters and moneyman George Soros. Pelosi and Reid have claimed the increasingly untenable position of the radical environmentalists and America-haters by adamantly refusing to consider proposals to increase production of known U.S. oil and natural gas reserves such as those in ANWR, the Destin Dome in the Gulf of Mexico just off the Florida panhandle and the abundant oil and natural gas in several Rocky Mountain states.

The Democrats’ position on new drilling is a political albatross that is certainly going to have its effects come November and in a bold (and perhaps brilliant) move President Bush yesterday again called upon Congress to end restrictions on drilling for new oil, chastising Democrats for not allowing a vote in the House prior to the August recess.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush chastised Democrats on Saturday for refusing to allow a vote on whether to lift the federal ban on offshore oil drilling before lawmakers departed for their summer recess.

‘To reduce pressure on prices, we need to increase the supply of oil, especially oil produced here at home,’ Bush said in his weekly radio address. It was the fourth time this week that he has called for Congress to end the drilling restrictions off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

‘But the leaders of the Democratic Congress have refused to allow a vote’ on whether the drilling moratoriums should be lifted, Bush complained.

By so doing, Pelosi and Company are put in the win-less position of either continuing to resist efforts to increase American oil production, and thus lower fuel costs, as it surely will in both the short term and long term, or (horrors!) concede to the demands of Bush and the minority Republicans. In the latter case Democrats can kiss their base and their major source of money goodbye. In choosing to be obstinate in the face of an obvious remedy and against the sentiment of the majority of Americans, the Democrats (i.e., Pelosi and Reid) have secured a position from which retreat is unthinkable and defense is political suicide. Brilliant!

Seal of Jeremiah Persecutor Found

From The Trumpet comes word that archaeology has uncovered the seal of one of the men who had the Hebrew prophet Jeremiah imprisoned for his prophecy of doom against Jerusalem.

One of Jeremiah’s accusers, Gedaliah the son of Pashur, had his name stamped on a small clay seal that was recently discovered about 600 feet south of the Temple Mount. Dr. Eilat Mazar, one of Israel’s top archaeologists, found the bulla earlier this year, in mint condition, while wet-sifting debris excavated under a tower at the north end of the City of David—the original site of ancient Jerusalem.

Archaeology is continually finding evidence of the truth of the Bible's claims. The scientific statements of the Bible are being found to match up with research, as are the historic claims.

Only where biased assumptions, such as ones that claim everything could have come from nothing without an outside cause, are made is there the appearance of inconsistency.

Voltaire's prediction over 200 years ago that "One hundred years from my day there will not be a Bible in the earth except one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosity seeker" has fallen a little flat.

A book that has withstood such monumental attempts to wipe it out, and such prolific and sustained attempts to discredit it, might be something worth taking a second look at, if you're a non-believer.
